READY TO FISH - MACKEREL.
Fairwater Fishing started off supplying heavy monofilament mackerel sets to local Hook & Line boats.
Years later, we still have our grass roots customers, and we are sending more & more top quality ready to fish mackerel sets to commercial fishermen all over the UK, Ireland, France, Netherlands, Iceland, Norway – even as far away as the USA, Australia and New Zealand.
All the ready to fish mackerel sets we supply are made by skilled tiers here at Fairwater using best quality materials and methods that are time tested and proven.
This ensures a neat finish and gear that fishes well and also stands up to the extreme stresses and strains associated with commercial hook and line fishing.
We are able to supply a range of ready to fish sets of hooks suitable for all fishermen from those hand lining with ultra fine gear to those fishing with jigging machines or a powered gurdy.
All our gear is made up with separate snoods tied to a mainline. We supply different line strengths to suit different fishing applications.
If you are not sure which is best for you then send us an email & we will get back to you.
1 ) Standard Fry.

The Fairwater Standard Fry has proved to be an exceptional fish catcher and so has been a popular choice for many fishermen using lighter gear.
The combination of Silver Mylar and Metallic Braid makes these one of the best synthetic fry imitations available; and the very best available to commercial fishermen today.
As an effective fry imitation, Mackerel find them irresistible.
We have also had some fine catches of Bass and Pollack using these hooks.
Fairwater Standard Fry are tied using size 10 VMC 9746 hooks
To each hook is tied with Mylar and Metallic braid with a short length of PVC tube

2 ) Small Fry

The Fairwater Small Fry has revolutionised summer mackerel fishing for many local fishermen.     In still, calm and clear conditions the Small Fry will frequently catch fish when nothing else will.
Small Fry use the same materials as Standard Fry tied onto smaller size 12 VMC 9754 hooks.
Sets of Fairwater Small Fry are best used in shallower waters; when fishing is hard going they will frequently out fish all other gear.

3 ) Fairwater Range – Metal Head

The Metal Head is a new way of making Mackerel traces that we have spent a couple of years developing with trials aboard our own boat and with help and feedback from fishermen all over the UK, Ireland and as far afield as the USA.
The concept allows us to make Mackerel traces with a single snood that are incredibly strong but will still out fish most sets of traditional heavy gear tied with Norwegian loops when the fish are not around in big numbers and not feeding hard.

The Metal Head was developed by us and is unique to Fairwater Fishing. It provides a very neat and secure connection that is virtually failsafe and it also has the added bonus of adding a little attraction to the hook too.

The hook and line Mackerel fishery here off the South Cornish coast can be unpredictable and hard going at times so it was important for us to develop Mackerel traces that were consistent and reliably strong to last when used with jigging machines yet made neatly, and with enough finesse that they will still catch well on the majority of days here when fish are not suicidal.

Each hook is dressed with bright glossy PVC tube and 4 strands of ribbon in the tail as well as the silver Metal Head.

We use extra strong Razorbill 894 Series Mackerel Hooks which we believe to be the best hooks for commercial Mackerel fishing that are currently available.

The modified points of the Razorbill 894 series hooks means they last much longer than standard hooks when used with fish stripping boxes

Our Metal Head traces are suitable for use with heavy hand winding set ups, powered Gurdy and Jigging machines.

Available in sets of 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 hooks.

Each set has a loop at the top for fast and secure connection and short sets can be easily joined together to make longer traces.

We aim to keep these items in stock & available for immediate shipping, but during busy times there can be delays so please check first if you are in a hurry. Otherwise we will do our best to pack & ship all orders as soon as possible.

Available in two mainline strengths -

RMA – Size 9 Razorbill 894-3 Hook, 1.2mm/180 lb Snood, 1.2mm / 180 lb Mainline

RMB – Size 9 Razorbill 894-3 Hook, 1.2mm/180 lb Snood, 1.4mm / 230 lb Mainline

4) Fairwater Industrial Swivel Gear

The new addition to our range of Mackerel traces are the strongest and heaviest we supply and they are made for the heaviest industrial style hook and line fishing with jigging machines.

These are not often suitable for use here in Cornwall or most other parts of England and Wales.
When fish are plentiful and competing for food making them easy to catch you don’t need to use light line or worry too much about using Mylar or Tinsel. The main priority is having strong reliable traces that will catch and put up with repeated heavy use and abuse.

Our heavy traces are made up with 75kg test nickel brass swivels holding a Razorbill Size 8 hook dressed with bright coloured PVC tube which is held in position on the mainline with an alloy stopper crimped either side.

In this set up the crane swivel replaces the monofilament snood that holds the hook. The swivel is able to rotate around the mainline freely and allows the hook to rotate 360 degrees in either direction making this type of gear far more hard wearing than traces tied in the traditional way and as there are no knots in the line there are fewer weak spots for potential breakages.

Trials were carried out by several fishermen in Shetland and mainland Scotland and the traces were proven to catch and last very well and the larger size 8 Razorbill hooks proved to be more effective with minimal fish loss.

The combination of the hook and swivel working together seems to be very effective at catching fish with many fine catches reported even after several days of use.

After a year of testing and positive feedback we are ready to add these traces to our range.

Each trace is supplied with hooks set in polystyrene block for neat and safe storage.
